Violence against women in the global era

Violence against women has recently become, once again, a theme of topical interest. Episodes of brutal violence against women are frequently reported from all over the world: a real slaughter, nearly a genocide. Or, better, a gynaegicide, as this violence finds justifications in a widespread idea of the woman's social inferiority and in the desire for control of woman's body, through limitations upon her sexual and social life.
In the first part of this book the author describes and analyses rapes, ill treatment in families, murders, cultural, institutional and economic violence – seen as social actions (rather than individual acts), correlate to gender inequality and, on a more general level, to the degree of inequality characterising each society. The second part offers a geographical approach, in a comparison of different cases like Italy, Scandinavian countries, USA and South America, Eastern Europe and Muslim countries.
Daniela Danna (1967) teaches in the Faculty of Sociology at the Milan University. She is researcher in gender studies, with a special interest in gay an lesbians' stories and problems. With elèuthera she already published Donne di mondo. Commercio del sesso e controllo statale (2004), about prostitution and immigration.
