il collettivo redazionale di elèuthera
Halfway through the seventeenth century one hundred English heretics fled religious persecutions and sailed the sea in search of a better world. Soon these 'Eleutheran Adventurers', as they called themselves, landed on a Bahamian island they named Elèuthera. There, they established a community of 'free and equals': the first free Republic of the new world.
Just as those pioneers, we set out towards a utopian island without a marked route, sailing the open sea by sight. The story of this journey reflects the essence of our publishing adventure, more than a quarter of a century long, in pursuit of books and authors with the ability to widen our perspectives and offer new libertarian glimpses into a cultural landscape plagued by conformity and totalitarian tendencies. This makes us not just a publishing house but a true interdisciplinary cultural research endeavour. We put forth an across-the-board reflection on new learning and customs and introduced terms like non-place, social imagery and métissage into everyday Italian dialogue.
Like in a cubist painting, the portrait of this experience is painted in the words of those authors, collaborators, friends and readers who made up elèuthera from its early beginnings. A kaleidoscopic bundle of testimonials from people who interrogate themselves on the virtues and possibilities of small-scale, quality publishing. Architects, teachers, journalists, indipendent publishers, together with comedians and musicians arguing for the significance, and the necessity, of a libertarian culture that can rise to the challenges inflicted by contemporary society.
